Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the necessity for collaborative efforts in establishing a more equitable and organized multipolar world, advocating for a fairer system of global governance. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Meeting held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on September 1, Xi highlighted the need for increased representation and a stronger voice for Global South countries in international matters. He pointed out that the rise of these nations is reshaping the global power dynamics, rendering the trend towards a multipolar world as unstoppable.
President Xi outlined the principles that should guide international relations, including sovereign equality, mutual respect, multilateralism, dialogue, and consultation. He called for equal rights, opportunities, and international rules that apply to all countries, irrespective of their size, power, or wealth. Xi also urged major global powers to adhere to international norms and the rule of law, stressing the importance of these standards in maintaining global harmony.
In his address, Xi stressed the importance of strengthening the United Nations’ role and ensuring broader participation in handling international affairs. He urged nations to prioritize development, foster openness and cooperation, and bridge the gaps in digital and artificial intelligence technology, ensuring that the benefits of these advancements are distributed more widely.
Xi also cited the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s 25-year history as a model of cooperation among diverse nations with varying political systems, cultures, and development levels. He advocated for stronger partnerships within the SCO Plus framework and enhanced collaboration across Asia and Europe, particularly through the Belt and Road initiative’s high-quality projects.
The remarks from Xi come a year after he introduced the Global Governance Initiative at the SCO Plus Meeting in Tianjin. Since its proposal, China claims the initiative has garnered support from numerous countries and international organizations, reinforcing Xi’s call for a more inclusive and balanced global governance system.
