Nvidia is set to acquire the AI developer platform Hugging Face for around $12.93 billion, marking one of the company’s most significant acquisitions to date. This strategic move aims to bolster Nvidia’s presence in the rapidly expanding open-source artificial intelligence landscape.
Founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, Hugging Face offers a platform that enables developers to access, test, share, and build AI models. It also provides valuable resources such as datasets, software libraries, and cloud services to facilitate the development and deployment of AI applications.
Through this acquisition, Nvidia gains enhanced access to a vast community of AI developers and open-weight models, which have become increasingly sought after as businesses look for cost-effective alternatives to pricier AI systems. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang assured that Hugging Face would continue to operate as an open platform for the broader AI ecosystem.
Financially, Nvidia will allocate approximately $11.9 billion to investors, while an additional $1 billion will be earmarked for equity-based retention incentives for employees joining the company. This deal comes at a time when major technology companies are developing their own AI chips, potentially reducing reliance on Nvidia’s processors. By venturing into AI software and open-source development, Nvidia is positioning itself to diversify its business amidst growing competition in the AI hardware sector.
