Taiwan’s foreign ministry has asserted that United Nations Resolution 2758 does not define Taiwan’s status as part of China, challenging interpretations that hinder its participation in international organizations. The ministry emphasized that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other, highlighting that Taiwan’s democratically elected government represents its people in global affairs.
The ministry criticized Beijing’s interpretation of Resolution 2758, which increasingly supports China’s stance on Taiwan’s international status. According to Taiwan, such interpretations could negatively impact its involvement in international organizations and regional activities.
Further, Taiwan argued that historical post-World War II agreements did not transfer sovereignty over Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China, noting that the Chinese government has never governed the island. In light of these assertions, Taiwan called on the global community to uphold a rules-based international order and urged the United Nations to maintain neutrality regarding Taiwan’s participation in international affairs.
