The newly opened Shengji Tunnel in Taipei is set to significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion between Zhongxiao East Road and the National Biotechnology Research Park in Nangang District. The NT$1.878 billion project, which includes a 716-meter tunnel section within its 824-meter length, offers a faster route connecting Nangang and Sijhih District in New Taipei City.
With this new infrastructure, travel times during peak hours between the research park and Nangang Station are expected to drop from 15-20 minutes to under 10 minutes. The tunnel not only facilitates smoother traffic flow on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road but also serves as an alternative route during flooding and emergencies typically affecting Academia Road.
The design of the Shengji Tunnel includes a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring a safer and more efficient commuting option for non-motorized traffic. This development is particularly beneficial given the strategic importance of the National Biotechnology Research Park, which has become a hub for over 2,600 researchers and professionals since its opening in 2018, driving growth in biomedical research and biotechnology activities in the region.
