The European Parliament has commended Taiwan for its resilience and technological prowess in a recent report, underscoring the island’s significant role in countering information manipulation and hybrid threats. The document, produced by the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield, positions Taiwan as a crucial ally in developing strategies to safeguard information integrity and human rights grounded in democratic principles.
Taiwan’s efforts in civil defense and resilience, particularly in response to China’s increasing gray-zone tactics, were highlighted in the report. The European Parliament noted that Taiwan’s comprehensive societal approach could offer valuable insights as the European Union seeks to enhance its own preparedness and resilience measures.
Recognizing Taiwan’s contributions to high-tech development, the report emphasized the island’s experience in countering hybrid attacks and foreign information interference. It called for strengthened cooperation and regular exchanges between the EU and East Asian partners like Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, focusing on countering information manipulation and securing undersea communication cables.
In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the report, affirming its commitment to bolstering cooperation with the EU and other partners. The ministry emphasized Taiwan’s ongoing dedication to addressing hybrid threats and information manipulation, while supporting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
