Diego Gomez’s foul on Jeremy Doku proved costly for Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, but the visitors showed tremendous character to fight back and earn a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The result extends City’s winless run to three consecutive league draws and leaves them five points behind Arsenal in the Premier League standings.
The penalty was awarded four minutes before halftime after Gomez brought down Doku inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review that upheld the referee’s decision, Erling Haaland stepped up to convert the spot-kick, scoring his 150th goal for Manchester City and his 20th in the Premier League this season, ending a three-match goal drought.
City appeared poised to extend their lead early in the second half when Bernardo Silva capitalised on a Brighton error, but his effort struck the post. The match saw a controversial moment when goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma and Maxim De Cuyper clashed, with both receiving yellow cards for their involvement.
Brighton made amends for Gomez’s earlier error when they equalised in the 60th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who demonstrated excellent technique to guide a low shot into the bottom corner from just outside the box. The Japanese winger received a pass from the flank and calmly slotted home to level the score.
After equalising, Brighton dominated proceedings and came agonisingly close to claiming all three points when Mitoma found Gomez inside the box, but the shot was saved, and Mitoma’s follow-up struck the post. In the closing stages, Haaland had a clear chance to win the match for City, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced an excellent save to deny him and secure a valuable point.
