by admin477351

Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has commenced a five-day state visit to Taiwan, aimed at fortifying diplomatic ties and expanding cooperative efforts between the two nations. During his visit, Pierre is set to meet with Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te and other senior officials to discuss mutual interests and explore avenues for future collaboration.

The visit includes an official military honours ceremony hosted by President Lai, as well as a formal banquet organized by Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung to welcome the Saint Lucian delegation. Accompanying the Prime Minister are Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A Jean, and Saint Lucia Development Bank Chairman Daryl Raymond.

In addition to diplomatic meetings, the delegation will tour various sites, including Cathay General Hospital, Taipei 101, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu. This visit marks Pierre’s fourth trip to Taiwan since taking office in 2021, highlighting the ongoing engagement and commitment to nurturing the partnership between the two countries.

Saint Lucia and Taiwan’s diplomatic relations were originally established in 1984 but experienced a hiatus in 1997 when Saint Lucia shifted its recognition to Beijing. Relations were reinstated in April 2007, making Saint Lucia one of the countries that officially maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan rather than the People’s Republic of China.

The current visit is expected to reinforce diplomatic engagement and explore potential cooperation in areas of shared interest, further cementing the bond between Saint Lucia and Taiwan.
