Taiwan has expressed gratitude for a recent European Parliament recommendation that rejects China’s attempts to limit Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and exchanges. The recommendation underscores the shared democratic values and existing economic, trade, and technological ties between Taiwan and the European Union (EU), while advocating for peace across the Taiwan Strait and opposing any unilateral changes to the status quo through force or coercion.
The European Parliament’s recommendation criticizes China’s alleged use of pressure to restrict Taiwan’s international engagement and raises concerns about the extraterritorial application of Chinese laws. It also acknowledges Taiwan’s significant role in the global semiconductor industry and high-tech supply chains, urging stronger cooperation between the EU and Taiwan in areas such as semiconductors, cybersecurity, and economic security.
In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of the European Parliament’s support for Taiwan’s international participation and regional stability. The ministry stated that Taiwan is committed to working with the EU and other like-minded partners to enhance technological cooperation, protect critical supply chains, and counter foreign information manipulation.
The recommendation also encourages the EU to lay the groundwork for negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement or another framework to bolster cooperation on critical supply chains. This development highlights the increasing importance of Taiwan-EU relations amid broader geopolitical tensions and concerns over the security of global technology and trade networks.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry expressed its appreciation for the European Parliament’s continued attention and support, reiterating its commitment to fostering closer ties with the EU. The ministry hopes to advance collaborative efforts in safeguarding shared interests and promoting stability in the region.
