Nordic leaders have called on China to leverage its influence in persuading Russia to end its war in Ukraine. This appeal was made during Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent visit to Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway. In Oslo, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre urged China to back initiatives aimed at achieving a ceasefire and fostering substantial peace discussions. He also voiced concerns over China’s ongoing economic relations with Russia, particularly through energy transactions.
During the discussions, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide revealed that the Nordic countries collectively encouraged China to motivate Russia to engage in negotiations without any preconditions. This unified stance reflects the region’s desire to see a resolution to the conflict, with China’s involvement seen as pivotal given its significant diplomatic sway.
Beyond the immediate issue of the Ukraine conflict, the meetings addressed several other critical areas, including trade, climate cooperation, renewable energy, and Arctic affairs. Norwegian officials emphasized the importance of collaborating with China where mutual interests align but also did not shy away from expressing concerns. These included issues related to national security, cybersecurity, human rights in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, and China’s increasing activities in the Arctic region.
Wang Yi’s tour of the Nordic countries, spanning five days, highlights China’s growing interest and involvement in the region. This visit comes at a time when geopolitical tensions are significantly influencing international diplomacy, with countries seeking to balance cooperative efforts with caution over security and human rights concerns.
