In a significant move to bolster its naval air defense capabilities, Taiwan is set to produce between 1,200 and 1,376 Hai Chien II missiles. This effort aims to modernize and standardize the missile systems used across its surface fleet. The decision comes after a successful live-fire test of the Hai Chien II, a naval variant of the Tien Chien II air-to-air missile, conducted off the southern coast of Taiwan.
Defense officials underscore that the Hai Chien II system will replace outdated air defense weapons on naval vessels, which have become insufficient against contemporary aircraft and evolving aerial threats. The navy estimates a requirement of 688 Hai Chien II missiles to equip both current and future warships, including Kang Ding-class frigates, next-generation light frigates, Tuo Chiang-class corvettes, and the Yushan-class amphibious landing platform dock.
Logistics assessments indicate that military forces generally maintain missile stockpiles that are 1.5 to 2 times the number needed for operational systems. This strategy ensures adequate reserves for prolonged combat operations, thereby contributing to the elevated production targets for the Hai Chien II missiles. Designed for integration with ship-based vertical launch systems, these missiles will provide enhanced range and comprehensive 360-degree air defense coverage.
As part of the modernization initiative, Taiwan is also upgrading its Kang Ding-class frigates with new launch systems capable of accommodating multiple Hai Chien II missiles. Additionally, future warship designs are being developed to incorporate these missiles as a central element of their air defense architecture. This initiative is part of Taiwan’s broader strategy to fortify its maritime defense capabilities amid escalating military activities and security challenges in the region.
