Taiwan Plans NT$10,000 Cash Payments for Residents Starting January 2027

Taiwan is set to distribute a one-time cash payment of NT$10,000 (approximately US$315) to eligible residents beginning January 2027, pending the government’s proposed budget approval. This initiative is part of the 2027 central government budget, with NT$235.7 billion allocated to share the economic benefits of the artificial intelligence industry’s growth.

The cash payment plan aims to distribute funds to Taiwanese citizens with household registration, foreign nationals with permanent residency, and certain residents with valid residence permits. Additionally, the scheme includes eligible spouses of Taiwanese citizens from China, Hong Kong, Macau, and other countries, as well as Taiwanese government employees serving overseas and their eligible dependents.

Residents will have five options to receive payments: bank-account registration, ATM withdrawals, post office withdrawals, direct deposits, and roster-based payments. A network of 17 financial institutions is expected to facilitate ATM withdrawals.

The timeline for these payments is contingent upon legislative approval of the budget by January 5, 2027, and presidential promulgation by January 20. If these conditions are met, pre-registration could start on January 20, with bank deposit registrations beginning January 25. The earliest payments via pre-registration, direct deposits, and roster-based methods could commence on January 26.

Subsequent payment methods include ATM withdrawals starting February 15, 2027, and post office withdrawals from February 22. The deadline for claiming the payment is set for August 31, 2027. However, eligible newborns born by the end of 2027 will have until January 31, 2028, to claim the payment.
