US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed the United States’ disapproval of China’s recent coast guard patrols near Taiwan, asserting that these actions threaten regional stability and heighten tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. Rubio’s comments came after a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila, where he emphasized the US’s ongoing concerns about Beijing’s activities around Taiwan.
The United States is committed to defending freedom of navigation and opposes any efforts to limit access to international waterways, according to Rubio. His remarks were made in the context of China’s announcement last month of “special maritime law enforcement operations” near Taiwan. China stated that these operations were a reaction to upcoming maritime boundary discussions involving Japan and the Philippines. Taiwan has noted an increase in the presence of Chinese coast guard vessels in the area, which have reportedly issued radio warnings to commercial ships.
During the meeting, Rubio and Wang Yi also discussed preparations for an upcoming visit by US President Donald Trump to Beijing in September. Both parties described the talks as constructive and agreed to maintain diplomatic engagement aimed at ensuring strategic stability.
