President Donald Trump believes a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia is near, but only if Ukraine acts fast. Trump warned on Thursday that Russia might “change their mind” if talks are prolonged. His comments set the stage for a weekend meeting in Miami between US and Russian officials.
The Miami talks will feature Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and a Russian delegation. This follows a similar engagement in Berlin with Ukrainian representatives. The administration is pushing hard for a resolution, using direct diplomacy to facilitate an agreement.
Trump expressed cautious optimism, stating, “They’re getting close to something.” However, he also issued a warning: “Every time they take too much time, then Russia changes their mind.” The message is clear: delay could be fatal to the peace process.
Despite the optimism, the territorial dispute remains unresolved. Ukraine refuses to cede land, focusing on the Donbas, while Russia demands concessions. The gap between the two positions is wide, and bridging it will require significant movement from one side.
Russia currently holds Crimea and parts of four other regions. Moscow demands a Ukrainian withdrawal from the Donbas as a condition for peace. With Russian negotiators showing little flexibility, Trump’s call for speed suggests he believes the current terms are the best Ukraine will get.
