Economic Hammer Falls: US Sanctions Russia’s Rosneft and Lukoil

by admin477351

The economic hammer has fallen on Russia’s energy sector. The Trump administration, in its first major sanctions action against Moscow, has targeted Rosneft and Lukoil, the nation’s two largest oil companies.
The move is designed to stop the flow of oil money that the US says “fund the Kremlin’s war machine.” Announcing the penalties, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent blamed Vladimir Putin’s “refusal to end this senseless war” and called for an “immediate ceasefire.”
This action aligns the US more closely with the UK, which sanctioned both firms last week. The EU, meanwhile, has sanctioned the state-owned Rosneft but has so far exempted the privately-owned Lukoil, largely due to objections from Hungary and Slovakia.
The sanctions were announced amid a deepening chill in US-Russia relations. President Trump confirmed on Wednesday that he had canceled a planned summit with Putin, stating that he “didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get.”
The EU is also preparing to increase pressure. Its 19th sanctions package is expected to include a ban on Russian LNG, a blacklist of “shadow fleet” oil tankers, and measures targeting Russian banks that help evade existing sanctions.
