A Parent’s Guide to Teen Tech and Acne

by admin477351

Your teenager’s face is breaking out, and you’ve bought all the right cleansers. But a celebrity dermatologist suggests parents should look beyond the face and consider a major contributor to modern teen acne: their ever-present earbuds and gaming headsets.
The connection is undeniable. A skin expert explains that teenagers are often “super-users” of these devices, wearing them for online classes, gaming, and socializing. This creates hours of uninterrupted occlusion and friction, a perfect storm for acne mechanica, which can appear on the face, neck, and ears.
Hygiene habits (or lack thereof) are a major factor. The dermatologist gently points out that teenagers aren’t always the most diligent about cleaning their accessories. Their earbuds are often tossed in a backpack or pocket, gathering bacteria, which are then transferred directly to their acne-prone skin. Sharing earbuds with friends is also a common and problematic habit.
Parents can help by reframing device care as part of skincare. The expert suggests making it a house rule: just as you brush your teeth before bed, you wipe down your tech devices at the end of the day. Provide a designated spot and a supply of alcohol wipes to make the habit easy to adopt.
Open a dialogue about the “why.” Explain to your teen that cleaning their headset isn’t just about protecting the expensive electronics; it’s about protecting their skin and preventing breakouts. By connecting the habit directly to a result they care about—clearer skin—you’re more likely to get their buy-in and help them manage this modern source of acne.
