A Gastroenterologist’s “Gut-First” Approach to Liver Health: 7 Foods

by admin477351

A specialist in digestion and nutrition has shared a “gut-first” approach to liver health, naming seven foods that support the vital gut-liver axis. The expert emphasizes that “a healthier gut is linked to a healthier liver.”
The number one food for this “gut-first” approach is cranberries. The doctor notes that cranberries or unsweetened cranberry juice are “packed with polyphenols that act as prebiotics for your gut bacteria,” which is the foundation of a healthy gut-liver axis.
While cranberries feed the gut, the other six foods support the liver’s functions. Apples, for example, provide soluble pectin fiber, which is also beneficial for digestion, and when paired with cinnamon, supports insulin sensitivity.
Raspberries are also on the list, offering fiber for the gut and anthocyanins for metabolic health, helping to regulate blood sugar and fat processing.
The remaining foods provide direct liver support. Pomegranates are rich in polyphenols to calm inflammation. Watermelon with lime and beetroot support blood flow. Beetroot also contains betaine to help the liver process fat, and strawberries with 70% dark chocolate support blood vessel health.
