Trump and Xi to Confront New Trade Hostilities in South Korea

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to confront a new wave of trade hostilities when they meet in South Korea on Thursday.
The “big meeting,” as Trump called it, will be on the sidelines of the APEC summit. Speaking from Tokyo, Trump was confident, saying, “I think it’s going to work out very well.”
The new hostilities include a US threat of 100% tariffs (from November 1) in response to China’s rare earth export controls.
A recent period of calm was further shattered by US port fees and subsequent countermeasures from Beijing.
Trump, however, focused on a diplomatic solution, calling the upcoming talks “fantastic” and “great for everybody.”
“We will be going to South Korea and the following day I am meeting with President Xi,” Trump said, outlining his schedule. He also noted that both he and his counterpart have “a lot to talk about.”
