An ad campaign from Ontario premier Doug Ford, which featured a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan , has prompted president Donald Trump to “terminate” all trade talks with Canada.
Ford, whose province has been “particularly badly hit” by 35% US tariffs, launched the ad to protest the levies. It features Reagan’s voice warning that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.”
Trump called the ad “fake” and “fraudulent” on truth social, accusing Canada of “egregious behavior” and interference in US legal matters.
The ad has also been condemned by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the full speech and was used without permission.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, now leaves premier ford and Canadian pm mark carney in a difficult position as their largest trade partner walks away.
